Saturday night at ABar seems to be one of the hot spots in Kingston, if you’re looking for a night out. Recently, we visited this energetic venue located at the Springs Plaza on Constant Spring Road (See Google Map location at end), after receiving raving reviews from friends about the good food and service that they provide.
Curiously, we decided to check them out to see if we would form the same opinion.
The entrance at A Bar Restaurant and Lounge was decorated giving patrons a feel of being at some grand event–like an award show. The vibe was very up beat as music from the dancehall genre bellowed inside the moderately lit venue.
We entered and was greeted by the pleasant hostess and was ushered to our seats almost immediately. We liked her demeanor which was very engaging and prompt. I am not a fan of loud noise, so it took a time to adjust to the thumping of the speakers, but after a while it felt almost normal.
Our order was taken quickly and our Chicken Soup, which we ordered as we sat down, arrived in record time. (The soup reminds me of the Saturday evenings of my youth, relaxing at home with the rain pouring down and enjoying a nice bowl of soup); it was so homely, thick and rich with pumpkin and chunks of chicken breast (yes it had meat!). I would have ordered another bowl but I needed space for what was to come.
The menu was very diverse and it was really hard to choose but we finally settled on Warm Cocktail Shrimp (juicy garlic shrimp prepared with coconut milk and garlic sauce), Hawaiian Chicken Salad (grilled ham and pineapples with tender chunks of chicken breast), Chicken BLT Wrap (warm flatbread with jerk chicken, tomato and lettuce with honey mustard sauce.
They did not ‘drop the ball’ with any of the dishes.
Flavor was on point; the shrimp was big and juicy and the sauce that accompanied them was rich with a nice garlicky and creamy flavor. I really expected a basic BLT wrap, but this one surpassed my expectations (off course everything tastes better with bacon, right?). The vegetables were crunchy and the cheese tied everything together.
Bradley’s Hawaiian Chicken Salad was delicious, with crisp, fresh vegetables and moist pieces of chicken breast coated with a drizzle of Caesar salad dressing. There were also bits of pineapple and ham that added to the delectable consistency of the dish.
We polished off the meal with Fruit Punch and Mai Tai (ideal for those who are not into drinking a lot of alcohol), and spent the rest of the evening relaxing and listening to the disc jockey’s music selections . I have a feeling A-Bar will be one of our favorite hangout spots in the future.
